  • Chenin and I just returned from a whirlwind trip to San Francisco for Matt and Mai's wedding. Kudos to Jennifer who made it up to No.Cal for less than 24 hours, half the time we had. But family is family in our clan and man, was it worth it. It was worth it to join the celebration for M&M alone, and it was worth it to visit with our entire family, and it was worth it to fly with Chenin and see our parents, and to see our two aunties who are expecting soon. But Uncle Bee's performance topped the entire trip like whipped cream on a sundae. My oh my, I don't believe I will be so surprised, delighted, and entertained all-at-once in all my lifetime. This usually reserved, stoic individual was shakin' his hips like John Travolta. I think the photographer, (another one of my uncles), was so shocked we may not have photos for proof. Anyway, it was a wonderful wedding and a wonderful visit.

I start my second major rotation as an intern tomorrow. What can I say...being an intern is like always sticking your foot in your mouth, but in a different way. Dignified moments are few and far between. Perseverance and grace (for yourself) seem to be the two pillars of survival. I'm lucky in that I find support from fellow interns, seniors, and faculty at every turn during this nosebleeding incline of a learning curve. It is fun, nevertheless. So here goes, until the end of September.

  • I'm driving around northern California wide-eyed. Everything seems so big: the stores, the serving sizes, the freeways, even the people. I can't fathom walking into Costco right now. And people are so quiet. No one is protesting or waving their hands at you. And their fashion is muted, navy blues and khaki. It seems...boring?

The funny thing is, I write these words laughing at myself, recalling my shock and entertainment upon moving to Beer Sheva four years ago. I remember the first time I learned my favorite supermarket, "Food Shack", ran out of peanut butter not uncommonly. Who runs out peanut butter?!, I used to say. And the fashions of middle-aged women. Our Hebrew Ulpan tutor was a sixty-year old woman with a dyed-maroon pixie cut who wore off-the-shoulder t-shirts with the playboy bunny logo.

It's an adjustment that I'm swallowing slowly. Thank goodness my sister is on this side of the transition.

  • Well, kids,

     I'm moving to Tacoma, Washington.

     This means a few things:

     1) I'll be 15 minutes from Chenin's work.
     2) I'll be purchasing a UV lamp.
     3) I'm training at my first choice. The Family Medicine program in Tacoma is
affiliated with University of Washington, un-opposed, full-spectrum program
with a strong emphasis in Pediatrics and inner-city care to the
     under-served.

As my dad said, its time to get some raingear, but I'll be smiling all the
     way.

  • Two quick details which make this week significant:

    1) Happy Birthday CHENIN!!! Hope you're having a fantastic visit for your bday!

    2) We find out if and where we matched. Its a 2-step process that started tonight. We toasted to St.Patrick's Day and to our Matching tonight, and Thursday we toast to our newfound homelands, wherever that may be. ;) So its an exciting week, and is definitely fueling some good work-outs at the gym to blow off anticipation.

Hope you're having a good week too,  Mook-Lan

About Me

  • Well what would you like to know? I'm named after a famous legendary Chinese woman warrior, (aka Mulan). What do I love to do? I love to learn. ask questions. take adventures. I'm at my best when I take time to find that space where everything in my mind and body and heart is silent, (yea its not easy), and absorb the peacefulness of knowing God's out there, He knows me (and you) by name, and He knows what He's doing. My second favorite, stare into the intricate beauty of nature, like wild flowers and bugs. (Did you ever look how intricate is the foot or antler of a beetle?) Third, have an intimate conversation with a friend.
